I would never have attempted to play these three beautiful pieces if it were not for Robin’s method of teaching. Thank you Robin.
Philip A.
Just completed this course.
I don't think anybody make the lessons easier than this lecturer. Simply awesome and I think it's a kind of psychological approach from the lecturer.
If you learn to play classical piano, please go dive into this right away!
Tariq H.
Robin is a great instructor. He breaks down these beautiful classical pieces into very digestible bits. His hierarchy of sheet music is also fantastically organized and useful, depending on where you are in your mastery of the song. He even adds good tips on how to take the songs to the next level. If you enjoy Satie, this video will certainly help you play his pieces, even if you're just a beginner like me.
Guy T.
I loved this course and the way the three musical pieces were divided into small easily digestible sections. You could quickly get a sense of achievement. The instructor's calm voice, explanations and encouragements worked well for me too. I learned to play the pieces much faster than I expected for a beginner!
Marie-France R.
I am completely amazed by this course. Not only did I learn to play the three beautiful Gnossiennes, which took me roughly 4 weeks to master each of them technically, but even better: on the way, this course taught me by example how to conquer any piece of music: by separating hands, figuring out the fingering, dividing the piece into smaller parts, practicing all of this slowly over and over and over again, to put it back together in the end.
At times I didn’t believe I’d ever be able to play the next section, but Robin explained clearly how to practice all the difficult parts.
And the method works. I’m still working on adding more expression to some parts, but I play the Gnossiennes so easily now that I can actually listen to myself playing and enjoy the experience.
Thank you Robin, I’ve enjoyed this course so much!
Alexander W.
An amazing piece of tutoring. He is SO CLEAR and generous with the way he teaches. Sometimes feels he’s at you shoulder. I cannot recommend him more highly and all the piano courses he does.
Robert F.
My son, who is 10, has been learning piano through online courses and tutorials for about a year. We got him this one as he has been looking for some beautiful but challenging pieces. He absolutely loves it. It took him a few days to learn each piece.
The instruction is clear and helpful, and the music is gorgeous. It's amazing to see how he has grown with this course and lovely to hear him play these, with increasing confidence and feeling, throughout the day each day.
As a course, we couldn't recommend this highly enough.
Lesia S.
I'm quite impressed how an online course can be actually better than a presenting course. I didn't expect much of this, but I'm 100% satisfied and do believe is one of the best courses out there. At least is working really well for me.
Also, my aunt is taking another course from this teacher and she's enjoying a lot.
Thank you
Alex C.
Through his method of breaking down the songs into parts and his thorough and clear instructions, and supplemental PDFs, I was able to learn how to play gnossienne 1 and 2 from memory in 6 months
Arnold
This is exactly the kind of music i was looking for when i stumbled across this course. I like them because they sound classical yet a bit jazzy, which i think would make great background music without attracting attention. I think they are great pieces to learn for a beginner because they are fairly easy to play for the complexity of sound (big bang for the buck!).
I took Robin's 'Piano for All' course too which was great so i was immediately sold on this course. Now i can play all three Gnossiennes pretty well.
Nicholas S
I have no words to express to you how good this course is, it’s AMAZING. The videos and PDF and easy to understand. I have learned each song in a matter of 5 days and I can now play them fluently. Wherever it’s a course from Robin hall you can expect to be good. This was such a great investment of my money
Anya P.
Never played piano before, I am learning so much and it is so fun to be able to play-- the resources that accompany the course are excellent.
Christiana D.
Exccellent course...I advise it to every body who want to work hard( repeat and repeat) and to enjoy. the lessons are cleared the course material good organized ...RECOMMENDED
Arie S.
I want to thank you for this course!
I started to learn as a novice using old 61-keys synth with squeaking plastic keys. In three months I started thinking on buying a good piano and in eight months I recorded my performance using my own perfect instrument.
You can listen to me playing the "Trois Gnossiennes" if you want https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPva4d9vNa1lgZhDRSjbekaWYfTz8Jueh
I am an amator and do not take real music lessons with a teacher. Robin's course helped me not only to learn to play three beautiful pieces but also pointed out many important things which you need to pay attention and this helps me to proceed with my studying as an amator.
Some of Robin's practice helps to be prepeared to perform even when nervous from the beginning to the end with reasonable amount of mistakes.
Maksym V.
This is an excellent course. The techniques taught enable you to learn the pieces step by step until you perfect it to whatever standard you wish. For me, my playing of #1 is still a bit mechanical, but I can play it without looking at the music and really enjoy being able to.
I don't like to sound like the old guy but I'm 68 and have never played piano (or keyboard in my case) before. I hope there will some new pieces by different composers in the future. I would definitely want to do those.
Highly Recommended.
Derek B.
Really enjoyed this course, it's been so helpful in learning play Satie's music. Very gentle, clear instructions and demonstrations on how to get the most out of the piece.
Marion P.
This is brilliant. I can’t imagine how a live teaching session could be better, as it can be paused, taken away, repeated.
Fergus R
Thank you for this journey into satie's World. I made progress in one of the hardest to define skills i;e. personal interpretation and feeling. I am delighted with the results ! Would strongly recommend for all levels of piano.
Anas C.
Great course and very good instructor, videos, resources. As far as I can tell this course also works for beginners if you are patient. I started learning piano six months ago (practicing 30-60 minutes per day) and started this course two months ago. Now I am already able to play Gnossienne no.1 quite well and just started learning number 2.
Jochen S.
Fantastic course to take a beginner like me through three beautiful classical pieces to the point that I can enjoy them from the perspective of a pianist (albeit a novice!) Thank you.
vincent R.
Great Course – Absolutely Love it. I'm currently taking Robin's Piano For All course, and I'm in the Classical Section, so this fits right in. Robin's style and methodology is fantastic. I learned No. 1 in less than a week. Take both courses - you'll be so glad you did. — A grateful student.
Paul L.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course.
I had heard Satie's Gymnopédies before, but not the Gnossiènes, and didn't really know what to expect. I initially found the musical scores a little overwhelming and intimidating when I first downloaded and looked at them, But Robin has structured this course extremely well, breaking down each of the three pieces into logical sections. I loved learning these pieces in such a manageable, step-by-step way.
Robin, thank you so much for guiding us through these beautiful pieces. I hope you'll offer more courses like this in the future.
Regine L.
Robin makes it so easy to learn. I had learnt the piano as a child but have gone back to it after many years and his method makes it really enjoyable as you see the progress you make. I did about 20 minutes each day and within two weeks I was playing the first piece.
Paola M.
It’s very well explained. Plenty of written material made in such a way that an individual just beginning to play piano can grasp it. I wish all courses would be presented in such a easy to learn format . Excellent job Robin!
Clifford K.
This method is absolutely one of the best ones I have ever tried to learn piano with. thank you so much for putting all these lessons together and I can't wait to learn more songs with this method from you, even the modern songs. thank you
Ehsan G.
Really fabulous course. I'm a "graduate" of PFA which incompletely adequate to tackle this at a comfortable speed; and I very much appreciated the teachers style and method.
And you end up with three lovely pieces to play for people and yourself.
Lionel S.
I am amazed!
Results have been totally over my expectations.
It almost feels unreal ("was that ME playing???")
Please do a course on "Bohemian Rhapsody next!
George T.
I am a 70 year old advanced beginner who has never tried to learn anything on my own without an instructor by my side. This was also my first attempt to play classical music. I had a great time, enjoyed every minute of it and felt like I did have someone to guide me through all of the pieces. I thought the presentations were very well organized and easily understood. I would definitely sign up for more of these. A great way to enjoy sheltering in place. Thanks again.
Paul B.
I learnt to play piano as a child, but never learnt to play pieces off by heart. This method requires focus, but I learnt to play No1 in less than a week from memory and am delighted.
Tanya P.
Excellent professeur. Explications claires. Approche systématique. As great as Piano for All. Many thanks, great course.
Michel
I enjoyed this course as much as any course I've taken. It is a good length and very focused--it teaches one thing and teaches it really well. It provides a step-by-step walkthrough for playing Erik Satie's Trois Gnossienes on Piano.
These are beautiful pieces and not too difficult to play, and Robin's method makes learning them really straightforward. I can now play through these pieces consistently, more or less by memory.
My ability to read sheet music for piano improved significantly, though that is only a secondary emphasis in the course. Highly recommended for an adult learner with a tiny bit of piano who wants to master one piece.
I'm already moving on to Robin's Bach course and looking forward to it.
David L.
Daniel B.
Confidence-Builder
Robin provides a wide variety of creative and interesting strategies for learning this piece, so if you persist, you can succeed, no matter what your learning style is.
I especially appreciate Robin’s motivation and advice for making practice time more effective. I’m using these practice strategies on other pieces, so my playing has become more accurate since taking this class!
I wasn’t too crazy about the Satie piece when I listened to the course preview, but I’m very glad I signed up for this course. I’ve come to quite enjoy this piece, now that I can play it. It’s very soothing. Plus, it’s a confidence booster, because the music actually sounds like it’s harder to play than it is.
I hope Robin will set up some additional classes like this, to help us master a few more fun and impressive pieces.
Carolyn C.
This play-by-ear method is a good way to teach piano instead of the old fashioned, boring and difficult method. Divide and conquer, right hand first, then left hand, then play both hands. This method breaks it down to its simplest form and even beginners can play. Practice, practice, practice. Thank you Mr. Robin Hall.
Eduardo A. D.
I loved the songs. Very easy to follow and the results in little time are amazing. It feels like I know how to play!
Arnau Panosa B.
No hesitation in giving this 5 stars. Beautiful pieces, taught exceptionally well. Thank you so much Robin Hall!
Martin O.
Fantastic course. Loved the breakdown and following the teacher. it also gave me a clue how to approach any piece in the future.
Thank you!
Dimitry V.
Very detailed explanations, and excellent understanding of what a beginner or intermediate player needs to know for this piece. Five stars!
Josh G.
I found the course easy to follow, and I was surprised at how quickly I made progress. Would definitely recommend the course.
Richard W.
Amazing teacher for amazing music. I can even start playing music at 76.
God bless You All
Have a blessed wonderful year full of love joy and peace.
Michael
A brilliantly constructed course
Scarlet B.
I've been working on other pieces and just getting back to the Gnossiennes again. The courses are so consistent and well thought out, it's easy to resume learning.
John M.
I mean... this is awesome. Great thorough instruction, breaks it down and makes it simple to follow and progress quickly.
Samuel R.
Progression très progressive et bonne pédagogie : on commence par le plaisir d’écouter, puis de jouer, puis de lire les notes
Jamous M.
A great course of quickly and effectively pickup these 3 cool classics. I only intended to go 1st piece but the instructor has put together the course so well and I did 2nd piece as well and have plans to do the 3rd one too.
Nice material, video and above all instructor have done a great job is walking me through the different section. I had about 6 months experience of learning/playing piano (all online) and was able to play first 2 pieces in this course pretty much in two weeks.
If the instructor is reading this comment.... Sir - Thanks for this great course and please create more such courses covering popular classics.
Vikas S.
I am incredibly happy with this course it’s changed the way I look at Music. I was completely overwhelmed with the Satie sheet music, 4flats! Now when I approach a piece I’m looking for patterns, for how the whole thing is structured. I listen more and better as well because I understand more. Thank you!
Luke R.
First I thought it was way out of my league, but with practise, I´m progressing a lot. The instructions are very clear. Thanks!
Jetta T.
De cursus heeft mij echt goed geholpen om weer een stap verder te komen. De lessen zijn overzichtelijk en duidelijk van structuur, net als bijgevoegde pdf's. Ik kan niet wachten op "nieuwe" muziekstukken...
Patrick K.
This is an excellent course brilliantly presented and taught, as are all of Robin's courses.
Steve L.
Sounds daunting at first but is broken down in such a way as to make it do-able. The combination of sheet music, cheat sheets plus the verbal instruction and video is very effective. If I can play the whole thing in two weeks anyone can as I am definitely a novice.
Pete.
Peter F.
I am 55, didn’t ever play the piano, however I do know how to read notes and I love classical music. Sati was not new to me. I enrolled to this course 3 weeks ago and so far it’s a pleasure.
At the beginning I thought it is too complicated as a first piece of music, however after practicing 4 time a week for 10-30 minutes i started to see noticeable improvement, like a magic it became easier and easier. Still I have mistakes and need more practice, however the “music” is there.
I highly recommend!
Yoav W.
WOW this instructor teaches in such an easy way to understand. From breaking down the sheet music to how to play expressively, everything seems so easy (because of the instructor). Thank you so much!! I learned the first Gnossienne in less thank a week. Fantastic!
Eric K.
This is an absolute 5-star course! Perfect! I hope many more will follow! I recommend this course to anyone who can already play a little bit of piano. Thank you very much for these fantastic lessons!
Daniel H.
Firstly, I haven't finished the course yet. But I have learnt how to play Gnossienne No1 (I started playing it fairly reasonably, within 24 hours, and polished my technique over the course of a week) and have now started to play Gnossienne No2. But I think I know enough about this course to comment. I have been studying Piano for All course by the same author. So I already know what to expect. I only have good things to say. It does not matter whether you read music or not, or whether you read music a little bit. You will learn to play these pieces. Even if you don't want to learn to play sheet music. There are enough ways to get you there and find yourself playing these beautiful pieces by Eric Sati.
Lawrence T.
Very good structure. You learn harmony (chords) first along with rythm. Then the melody. All along with some background information. Learnt to play Gnossienne No.1 after few hours.
Sönke D.
After literally one week of 20 minutes per day I could play the first piece without sheet music- this system is so satisfying and really works.!! Doesn’t mean I can improvise jazz yet but it’s totally got me enthusiastic to play and learn more. 5* from me...
Tristan C.
This course changed my mind about learning the piano! With a new method of teaching, it helps to learn and play classical pieces more smoothly. Although it teaches you to play only three pieces, I recommend you to take it and enjoy it!
Pouya L.
The lessons are nice and slow for a beginner, and the music is beautiful! Thank you....
Pauline E.
As an adult piano learner, I've studied playing piano with all kinds of methods for years. Yet I can only play two simple pieces. Following this course though, I learned the Gnossienne No 1 over a weekend(less than 10 hours). It feels great! And I get more interested in music theory now (tried to study the chords and inversions once, but it hadn't make much sense to me) as I can see how the chords work in action. Amazing course. Thank you for putting it together.
Hua W.
Great match for where I am because it is a very helpful reinforcement to my current music lessons that I’ m currently studying with a live instructor.
Alan Yip C.
Brilliantly organized!!!!!This course is great in all respects. I look forward to more like it.
Krisanna J.
C'est excellent mais parfois un peu trop rapide

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
-
Is the course beginner friendly?
Absolutely!
All the Classics By Ear course are created for absolute beginners. No musical background needed.
You’ll learn through short videos, clear keyboard diagrams, memory tips and cheat sheets.
We start by playing by ear while introducing the small amount of reading you need.
You’ll learn to see the keyboard as simple shapes and patterns.
Once you can play a piece by ear, the sheet music is so much easier to follow.
-
What's the difference between Classics By Ear and Pianoforall?
Pianoforall focuses mostly on popular styles (with some relatively easy classical pieces) and builds a full skillset: rhythm, chords, patterns, improvisation, and reading music AS you learn to play 'by ear'.
––––––––––––––––––
Classics By Ear are focused, beginner-friendly masterclasses on carefully chosen iconic classical pieces that sound sophisticated but are surprisingly easy to play if taught the right way.
Each piece is taught in depth, with:
Bar-by-bar breakdown with clear bite-sized practice chunks
Memorisation strategies and what to repeat (and why)
Adding Expression (how to make it sing)
Multi-format teaching: annotated sheet music, cheat sheets, video, keyboard diagrams (plus slow/looped demos).
––––––––––––––––––
How they fit together:
Want the broad skillset to play anything? Start with Pianoforall.
Want a beautiful classical piece under your fingers fast (with real musicality)? Take a Classics By Ear.
Best of both worlds: use Classics By Ear for repertoire while Pianoforall builds the underlying skills.
-
How much time would I have to practice each day
Ideally you should aim for an hour but many students do well on 30 minutes a day thanks to the step-by-step method.
-
Am I too old to learn these pieces?
No way! If you were learning in the old fashioned way then it can take years - but with Classics By Ear you will be playing these beautiful pieces with months and learning so much musical knowledge along the way.
-
I can read music already. What else will the course teach me?
Reading notation is a valuable skill, but many sight-readers can only play what’s in front of them.
Classics By Ear takes a different approach. We focus on the underlying patterns—chords, shapes, voice-leading, and form—so you understand why the music hangs together and how to recreate it from memory.
Sight-reading ability varies widely, and that’s fine. If you read well, you’ll progress faster; if you don’t, we’ll show you the structures that make a piece feel natural under the hands. The result is the same: you’ll be able to play complex, polished music without depending on sheet music.
-
Are there workbooks or sheet music?
The course comes with exceptional PDF resources which can be viewed on your digital device or printed out to set on your keyboard or piano.
-
Do I need special software or computer skills?
After you sign up you get INSTANT ACCESS to the lessons. Everything is contained with a very user-friendly course player.
The lessons are accessed online via your browser on a computer, tablet or phone.
But if you wanted to work offline you also get the complete course in downloadable ebooks (available after the refund period has passed)
-
What if I only have a keyboard?
The lessons work equally well on a keyboard, digital piano or acoustic piano.
The criteria for a keyboard are as follows
- At least 61 keys.
- 76 or 88 keys is definitely preferable if size and cost is not an issue
- It MUST have 'touch response'
- You MUST get a sustain pedal to plug in to it
- I prefer weighted or semi weighted keys - but its up to your budget
-
