Classics By Ear - Moonlight Sonata
Now ANYONE can learn incredible Classical Piano
This course includes...
I would buy any course by robin hall. This and others i have bought are great and inspirational
Scarlet Buckle
I love this course. Robin makes it so easy to understand and so calm in teaching. Just love all his course so far and want to learn more from him.
Tammy Watanabe
I love your soothing, calming voice. This course has helped me to fill in the gaps. Thank you for breaking it all down in bite size pieces.
Jasmin Jinn
Quite a fast start and fast playing for a complete beginner. I have to stop the videos and play bits many times to properly see which chords were used when and what the fingers did. Nevertheless, overall really good and enjoyable course, and I learned to play the 1st movement of the Moonlight Sonata never having played piano and not been able to read notes. Love it.
Claudia Kappenberg
This is incredible course for a self taught hobby and though it’s difficult to begin with and has to be learnt in piece meal chunks first before putting together when you get to end of sheet one which you don’t think you will ever accomplish at first it really is a gratifying feeling. Just to be able to learn to play a tune you like for yourself in your own time by following along to the guidance this course musician provides aligned with the detailed sheet music has, imo made this a worthwhile hobby I enjoy returning to, so from me it’s a thumbs up. I have a ways to go yet as I took this up alongside my academic studies which are also a completely new field and this course helps give me that much needed break and escapism all in the comfort of my own home and, not having to worry about being frowned upon by a tutor for hitting those wrong chords or missing that note when practising to string a row of bars together lol. Well worth purchasing in my opinion and presented by someone who has put such effort into their online course to help others interested in and wanting to learn and study at the own pace and, who is worthy of much more praise than I could ever offer up.
Aidan Jon Walker
Clear & informative. I teach piano improvisation & musicality. I create my own material as Piano books give the student too much information in one go, making them stressed out and confused. This type of teaching is exactly what adult beginners need.
Benita Laakso
The best course that i have bought. I would like to give 6 stars! Congratulations Robin, great work! l also bought the Preludes of J.S.Bach, very, very good! I never thought to be able to play them by ear - But finally I was successful! I hope there will be more "Classics by ear"! Thanks you!
Christian Kritzler
I never thought I would be able to play this piece, or anything as complex as this. But the way Robin Hall takes you literally by the hand and guides you step by step, it’s just amazing, I mean it works, all it takes is persistence and the results will come. Of course, this is a complex and fairly difficult piece, it is not for novices but with Robin Halls’ guidance, someone with a few years experience, (let’s say, someone like me who has competed most of Robin Halls “Piano For All” course) can give it a go and with practice, the results will come. Also, a suggestion: if you try this score/course and you find it difficult, do Robin Halls’ Bach Preludes course first or even his Satie course, both courses follow the same method with well written scores, keyboard diagrams and step by step guidance, and Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C major (BWV 846) and Satie's Gnossienne No 1 are much simpler than the Moonlight Sonata Mov 1, this is what I did and as I said, the results have been above my expectations...
George Theotokis
Excellent way to learn, especially if you never learned to play the formal way. Breaking the piece down into bite sized chunks and learning one section until you have memorized it before learning the next. You'll be surprised how quickly you can reach a reasonable standard of playing this piece.
Lawrence The ghostwriter
Really breaks down the information you need into digestible form.
David Stow
Best course on not only learning one of the greatest classical songs of all time but also incredible for learning to play the piano. As someone who has only a few months of piano experience, this course was excellent in guiding, explaining, and illustrating how to correctly play each cord. There will be frustration on your end because of inevitable struggle but if you stick through with it, your future self will thank you. Don't give up!
Russell Lopez
Easy to understand , way more clear than YouTube
Ruyin Lu
It’s the best piano course I’ve taken. I’m currently working on pianoforall as well. Would recommend to anyone that wants to play a classic and inadvertently learn some music theory along the way.
Wilson J Heredia
This is the second piano course I've taken with Robin Hall, and I have been very pleased with the content of the courses. Robin clearly understands how to convey his knowledge of the piano to his students. Whether someone is a beginner or intermediate student, Robin addresses the course content for all. I am impressed with the level of information, which includes video content and pdf music sheets, that Robin includes with the courses. Clearly a lot of work for him! Thanks for offering these piano courses, great value for the money and time spent. Thanks to Robin, I am back to playing piano and staying with it, and very pleased with my progress.
Joseph Burke
The best-ever method to learn a song. it took me a while to finish this course but it absolutely worth it. I learned 3 more pieces of Classics By Ear - Erik Satie from Robin too and I'm happy that I chose Robin to be my teacher. I'm really looking forward to learning more from him. Wish you the best.
Ehsan Ghafourian
This is my first learning a song...very easy directions. Thank you!
Phuong Nguyen
An exceptional course!. I managed to finish the material in about 2 months and can now confidently play the whole movement without sheet music!
Pandula Weerasooriya
I've wanted to learn how to play all my life and I've finally taken the plunge at 63! Moonlight Sonata is the 1st song I'm learning to play and the journey with Robin is fantastic so far! I'm still on the first page but everyday is a victory! Between the video, the sheet music (which I'm reading by the way) and Robin's great voice, I'm on my way. I'm also learning with the entire Pianoforall course, which is also fantastic and deserves it's own separate review. Bravo Robin, Bravo!!!
Joe Garcia
Absolutely. Love the emphasis of learning by ear in manageable sections. Not so overwhelming
Jene McClellan
Just up to bar 9 so far but it is amazing and I know already that I'll be through with the whole song soon, but with the required practice on each bar. Feels like ONLY 60 bars to go :)
Muhammad Haroon
As always, excellent! I love studying with Robin Hall.
Tuna Kuyucu
Excellent course. Especially appreciate the fingering notation and highlighting of the sharp notes. Labeling of the notes in general and videos of the bars being played are also very helpful.
Robert Obsieger
What an incredible course! That's how piano should be taught. No oversimplifying and making false promises like most online methods. You need to engage with the material, not follow blindly. Robin Hall teaches you the most effective/proper way to study every piece of music. No other teacher I ever had in private tutoring explained that well how one should learn the piano. Thank you! P.S. Robin are you planning in making more step by step guides for other pieces that those already on the platform?
Iason Katechis
it is not just about "what to do" but how to do it, how to remember it, and it is wisdom
Ken L
Excelent Course, at first for a beginner the sonata could seem too difficult but with the help of the detailed instructions of Robin you are able to advanced in this beautiful piece...
Ricardo Morales
I love the teaching technique, as it's really easy to follow and each section is perfectly laid out to be able to learn it by ear. Highly recommended!!! I've been playing guitar since I was 12 and performing to audiences since I was 13, so I need a way to learn the piano that will keep me engaged and this is it! I have already learnt Prelude in C and Prelude in Cm and they are the only two tunes I can play on piano. This will be my third!
Dave Nicholls
Great teaching method. Easy to follow and tremendous satisfaction with each successful section learnt!
Jeremy Jacks
I am 48 yrs old and started learning piano during my late 30s, taking overall 10-15 hours of private courses. I had this sheet music book gifted with my electronic piano when I bought it. I always stared at the notes of Moonlight Sonata and tried to play, but I decided I needed 3 hands to play this song, which meant it was impossible for me! Till I met this course. I appreciate the efforts of Robin Hall. I have little knowledge of reading notes. I usually unwillingly memorize each song I play while studying, and this is not good as far as I know. Therefore, this course is invaluable for people like me. It took me about 2 months to complete the course (studying only on weekends and in the evenings) and finally today I could play the whole song without mistake. I need to practice more, in order to play in front of my friends and family and to add more expressions. Thank you.
Yasemin Saygıdeğer
This is a very good match for me. I think that I am going to learn a lot. I like the red dots and sheet music. I was never told to learn the C notes and then use them for a guide to other notes. I am at the midpoint now and I'm enjoying the lessons. I've never stayed with a lesson as long as I have with this. I really enjoy it. You have such great lesson structure and pacing.
Joseph Grant
I have tried to learn this a few times now and this course has given me the tools needed to finally do it.
Rodrigo Balibrera
really good class took me a little over a month to finish but now i can play the song mostly by memory.
Vincent Burger
Great to be learning a real piece, using chords and most of the keyboard. Surprised myself at what I have been able to achieve
Paul Seaman
This course is wonderful. The instructions are detailed and clear, with easy-to-follow demonstrations. I could always get useful tips when I needed them. I couldn't possibly manage to learn this beautiful piece without this course, in only 28 days. (last time I wanted to learn it from sheet music and gave up at bar 5...) I played this piece in front of my family and got loads of praise :D Thank you, dear instructor. Learning piano has never been this engaging and fun.
Hua Wei
Although this is challenging for me I am in awe regarding Robin's awesome method of teaching.
Nancy Beggin
This is the best course I've ever had. The teaching technique, simple and helpful explanations, duration of sections, ... Everything is just perfectly adjusted. Thank you so much.
Gizem Aktuğ
I’ve always wanted to learn this piece of beautiful music when I first it when I was young. This course is so easy to follow and with a lot of practise and determination I can now play it through memory. The ability to just sit down at a piano and play this give me so much pleasure. I’m so grateful to you for sharing this. Thank you
Peter Corrigan
This course may be a life changer for me. I have never played a musical instrument and I have no musical education at all, except for a 2-year education I had 40 years ago at Preparatory School. But after buying my digital Roland FP-30X piano and starting this course (about 2 months ago), I'm now able to play from ear up to section 59!!! I'm almost finishing. My wife and friends are puzzled :) :). I always thought that these and some other classical works were only attainable by professional pianists, but I'm able to play it!!! What a great achievement I made! Of course, few good things come without effort. I've playing almost every single day for the past two months (although only for about 20 minutes each day). Thanks for this wonderful course, Robin Hall and for having me entering the wonderful world of music and piano. I can hardly wait for the next course!! I will probably buy the Bach Preludes. I will also try to learn more about scales and chords and musical theory in general. Best regards, Nuno Guerreiro
Nuno Guerreiro
Clear instructions and easy to understand and follow along. Also really fun to learn!
Kim Lajeunesse
Absolutely beautiful instruction, pace, and materials
Mombajuice
Really enjoying the logical instructions and methods together with the clarity of the diagrams with keys and finger positions- it makes learning a pleasure
David Edwards
This is the second course I have studied with this tutor. I find his method of instruction is excellent for my limitations. Having left and right hand coordination problems.
Kenneth
This course was amazing - as was the Bach preludes course. It delivered as promised! I now know how to play the Moonlight Sonata! Put in the time, follow his instructions and you will learn how to play it. I'm amazed. I'm 53 and I've tried to learn piano over the years. I came across this and figured why not?! I plan on continuing to learn how to read sheet music and improve but in the meantime - I now have a few beautiful songs under my belt that I play often - very relaxing and fulfilling.
Fernando Rodriguez
I just finished my course, Moonlight sonata… I am very happy. Robin Hall is an excellent teacher. I thought I wasn't going to be able to learn the whole sonata, but I did. My husband and children are very surprised with the results. I feel very happy because playing the piano was my dream since I was a child and even though I am now an adult, I succeeded. I love classical music dearly. THANK YOU VERY MUCH PROFESSOR ROBIN HALL !!!!
Juana Rozo
It is a truly inspirational course for me. I am making progress !!! Just in time I have found the words of encouragement and support. So important to have those. Great teacher. I am really grateful for the clear and easy to follow visual instructions that I needed most as I am studying without a tutor by my side.
Sergio
Do I recommend this course? YES, highly. I sort of learned to play the piano as a child, if you know what I mean, and there were times when I tried to teach myself to play Moonlight Sonata. I never got past the first 2-3 lines. Decades later, here I am playing Moonlight Sonata in its entirety, all thanks to this wonderful course. I’d like to say it’s a miracle, but in reality, it was a combination of patience and practice on my part AND the use of Robin Hall’s amazing program. The course is divided into lessons that present this complex (imho) piece of music in manageable sections. Robin offers a very thorough review of each section along with suggestions on how to remember the fingering, which is very helpful. It takes time to learn this piece of music. I practiced every day and only moved on to the next lesson when I felt comfortable with what I had learned so far. I feel that one of the most important things is to allow yourself to enjoy the process of learning each section and to not solely focus on the goal. In this way, you’ll have fun and you’ll keep progressing! Then, before you know it, one day, you too will be playing Moonlight Sonata all on your own.
Tracey D
I bought this on july 16, never played piano before and I managed to finish this course and learn the whole piece by the time I'm writing this review, which is approximately 3 months. I have to admit there where a few weeks a didn't practice at all x) but the course is great and now I'm gonna continue with his next course =)
Julio Vergara
Another great course from Robin! I learned this piece very slowly over several months but finally made it to the end of the 69 bars today! Now looking forward to adding expression and playing it for my friends when I finally have them over next month. Thanks!
Marie-France Roy
This is my second course from this amazing teacher. I'm a 62 year old novice, but these courses have made me a better player than I ever expected to be. Thank you.
Ken Koehler
Brilliant way of learning, excellent teacher.
Maura Carty
Love the section breakouts and clear indicators of sharps. Very nice and much faster than trying to learn it from sheet music alone.
Diane Salter
This course was spectacular! It was well explained and I cannot wait to see what Robin Hall has in mind for future piano courses
Anya Potgieter
Wonderful course with lots of useful information and tips.
Sandor Szegedi
Robin is just a fantastic teacher! He takes the time to teach. The videos are easy to follow, and the method Robin uses is constructed to take beginners to achieve satisfying results. I have taken four of his classes (now beginning Moonlight Sonata) and I’m stoked for Robin to reveal his next course. Thank you, Robin!
Dale Bertucci
An amazing way to learn playing a piece of music. Before I tried to learn how to read notes, but I’ve never been able to play from a sheet, especially long tunes. Now I realized how easy it is to put letters near notes and be able to concentrate on playing and learning the music, not on reading the notes. After 2 months of everyday practice I now can play the Moonlight sonata and enjoy it. Certainly I have a long way ahead to practice it, but the reading of notes is not a blocker any more. Many thanks for the course.
Andrei Akimov
Awesome Explanation, Really Great & Amazing Learning Experience.
Vinn
This my second course from Robin. I think he is one of the best in the world in terms of subject matter and also teaching in a way we can easily understand! Highly Recommended!
John Khalkho
This was the most challenging piano piece I have learned so far. I have wanted to learn how to play this for a long time, and honestly wondered whether it was beyond my ability. Robin's course, which broke it down into small manageable, logical chunks, showed me that it was indeed possible for me to learn this - with perseverance and lots and lots of repetition and practice! Thank you so much, Robin, for another excellent course.
Regine Lord
Excellent lessons, clear and easy to understand. Delighted I got this course.
Mary Lynch
This is great course! I never thought I could play this piece and understand it in such an easy to follow instruction. Excellent instructor!
Felipe Oceguera
Excellent course! It made learning this piece a joy instead of a struggle.
Robert Uhlhorn
Yes, excellent. I think it's a great idea to play tunes you enjoy. Makes learning more fun. These courses are easy to follow
Steve Phillips
Playing this piece has always been a dream for me; I cant believe I actually made it through this course. I can now play the entire first movement of Moonlight Sonata by memory. Thank you, Mr. Robin Hall for your wonderful and effective teaching.
Noellah Jeannica
First rate tutorial, truly piano for all as promised, what a feel good factor well done Robin
Godfrey Russell
I always wanted to be able to play this exact piece, but got stuck pretty quickly and gave up. Now I can already play it up to the 2nd page! I would never have thought this! Thank you so much for teaching me this! This method of breaking the piece down into individual pieces, combined with the excellent explanations in the video and the perfect printable documents, is for me the best way to learn piano. I absolutely recommend this as well as all of Robin's other courses. I sincerely hope that there will be more courses. I will attend all of them without exception. Thank you again Mr. Hall!
Daniel H.
Very nicely organized and very easy to learn! I had no piano training but I can play. Can’t wait to start another one!
Jinglei
Robin Hall is a superb teacher. The programme and its accompanying resources are crystal clear and Robin’s presentation of memorable elements makes difficult passages accessible to the learner.
Fergus Ryan
Third course I've taken from this gentleman. I like his easy, no nonsense style and he explains very well.
Peter Farr
I watched the preview and learned to play the first couple measures of Moonlight Sonata which is one of my favorite classical pieces so I had to purchase the course while it was on sale. Thank you for taking the time to compile this teaching.
Chad Lindsey
Still undertaking this course, and surprising myself as to the music I am able to produce
Neil Tyson
I can play better than I ever thought possible!!! I love these courses!!! Thank you!!!
Jody Honeyman
I've been wanting to play this for years but thinking it was too difficult, not with this way of teaching. its just great. I could play bars 1 to 5 but within days of having this course I am working on bar 10 top marks.
Christopher Wheeler
Thank you so much Mr. Hall. I am really excited about learning to play a movement from a Beethoven sonata. I have derived hours of pleasure from your Bach’s Prelude in C major, and am continuing to work on the Prelude in C minor. Your courses are just wonderful, especially for older people like me who have always wanted to play classical music on the piano.
Clyde Fisher
When the email came through, alerting me to this brand new "Classics By Ear" course by Robin Hall, I didn't need to think twice about purchasing - indeed I was excited and delighted. Having purchased all of Robin's previous courses, I was fully aware of just how excellent they are (not to mention very INexpensive) so there was no chance of my hesitating, and I purchased immediately. And from the increasing numbers of students who have also signed up within just the first few days, I am clearly not alone in my opinion.
Robin's method is superbly in-depth and meticulous, taking things slow but steady, and breaking things down into bite-sized and easy to consume morsels - really zooming in on every note and nuance of every bar, little by little, utilizing sheet music, cheat sheets and also "Memorable Elements", so that with each and every small step you know exactly what you should be doing, where you are heading, and how you should be playing - the fingering, expression, etc etc. Basically, you know that Robin really cares about teaching you how to play great music on the piano!
I have already made a start and am truly loving playing this haunting yet beautiful piece - a "timeless classic" indeed! After a couple of days I am already practicing the full page 1 (both with and without the splendid alternate mini-ending variation for bar 15 - a nice little touch which gives you the satisfaction of completing, if you will, a "Mini Moonlight Sonata" Prologue ("Op. 27, No. 2A"???) quite early in your endeavors; but which only whets your appetite even more to keep on moving forward - encouraging you to progress on and on to discover the rich beauty of this piece, and the amazing satisfaction that comes with getting it "under the fingers"... and "tantalising the ears"...
And so I am well and truly "juggling" ;-) ... as Robin advises in his courses... although perhaps in a different way than he intends; but I hope that's still okay, as I have several pieces on the go now - including the Bach Preludes (I'm saving the Satie course for now (although I have sampled several videos) so as not to take too much on, but will certainly be working on those pieces too when I've made significant progress with the Beethoven and Bach pieces).
The bottom line : I am truly addicted to learning this beautiful piece (quite possibly my favourite of Robin's "CLASSICS BY EAR" so far); so many many thanks again, Robin, for a wonderful and meticulously planned course. And for those considering it - and especially if you have always wanted to play this timeless piece - do not hesitate. Just buy this course, press play on the first lesson - dive in (and print off the sheet music/cheat sheets etc) ... take it slow and steady... and simply enjoy playing beautiful music. The fingering/octave+ stretches can perhaps be a challenge at times, but do persevere, and I promise you that you will be glad that you did, and will have no regrets whatsoever...
A wonderful piece, especially relaxing and therapeutic, and indeed something very worthwhile upon which to focus one's mind, body and soul in particular as a most welcome respite and distraction during these challenging Covid lockdown times...
Chris Harvey
Another excellent course and a piece of music that I have wanted to learn for a very long time. Robin’s skill in breaking each piece into manageable sections and his calm, patient and logical approach to teaching inspires confidence and makes learning an absolute joy. I loved the Erik Satie and Bach courses and Moonlight Sonata is, in my mind, even better. I had tried learning piano on and off over the years with very limited success but am now building up a repertoire of beautiful pieces that I can play from memory every day. Thanks Robin 🙂
Ken Wherrell
Excellent teacher! Very well laid out course and well-paced.
John E
Teacher is excellent at explaining. Listens when we ask for certain music and helps us play the piece perfectly. Great choice in instructor!
Alicia Martin
I purchased all his courses and it’s been a great piano journey till date. The aspect I really appreciate is he always addresses any and all questions beginners have in their mind including any self confidence related issues beginners have on their piano learning capabilities.
Badri
I really appreciate the approach you take - learning to play by ear is just so so rewarding but I now realise the 10,000 hours factor is so true -I need to practice productively everyday -which I am yet to achieve but will get there -I have purchased your previous 2 courses and found them most helpful(Classic/Eric Sate )-the courses are so accessible - many thanks much appreciated -I dream of playing Moonlight Sonata to my family -lets see if i can achieve that !!!!

General Questions
This course is designed for everyone, regardless of prior musical knowledge
You will be learning though a mixture of video instruction, keyboard diagrams, memory tricks and cheat sheets and AS you learn to play by ear you will also learn how to follow the sheet music.
You will only need a very basic understanding of sheet music to learn any of these courses and for those that need it, this is taught in 30 minutes in the first section
Mainly, you are going to learn to see the piano in a new way. Instead of a frightening alien language you will learn to see the keyboard in terms of SHAPES and PATTERNS.
Once you can play the pieces 'by ear' the sheet music is SO much easier to follow.
Ideally an hour every day - but many students have learned the pieces within months with just 30 minutes practice every day. The teaching methods really DO work!
No way! If you were learning in the old fashioned way then it can take years - but with Classics By Ear you will be playing these beautiful pieces with months and learning so much musical knowledge along the way.
While the ability to read sheet music is valuable, it often restricts musicians to playing only what is written.
Classics By Ear takes you beyond the confines of sheet music, and provides a unique approach that focuses on the fundamental structures and principles of music.
You’ll learn the “why” behind the music, gaining a deeper understanding of how it all fits together.
The course comes with exceptional PDF resources which can be viewed on your digital device or printed out to set on your keyboard or piano.
